Our finishing sub-spindle for ST-10 through ST-25 turning centers – including Y-axis models – will not only make you more productive, and but will also provide new options for finishing the 2nd-op side of your parts.

This affordable A2-5 spindle is equipped with a 5.3-inch hydraulic chuck, and will fully synchronize with the main spindle to provide effortless “in-cycle” part handoff. This allows you to finish-off the “other half” of your part in a single setup – simply load up your raw workpiece, and the next time you open the door, you’ll have a finished part. A built-in part ejector propels the finished part into the optional parts catcher for automated operation.

Note: Not compatible with the VDI or BOT turret, or the tailstock option. The sub-spindle is compatible with the APL; however, the APL can only load/unload parts from the main spindle.

Sub-Spindle Programming

Sub-Spindle programming is made simple by the Haas control. Forget about having to program the Z-axis in the positive direction. Simply program the Sub-Spindle operations the same way you would for the Main Spindle, insert G14 (Secondary Spindle Swap) at the Sub-Spindle Tool Call in the program, and the control does everything for you – from turning on the spindle in the correct direction, to opening and closing the chuck, to turning on the coolant, and more. 

The Main and Sub-Spindle can fully synchronize, so you can pass-off a part with the chucks turning. The Sub-Spindle also is capable of phasing (orientation), so you can grip parts with odd shapes. 

A dedicated active G-code display on the control lets you know the status of both spindles at all times. 

 

Sub-Spindle Turrets and Tooling Kits (ST-10, 10Y, 15, 15Y)

The A2-5 Finishing Sub-Spindle Option requires the Hybrid (VB10) turret option. The Hybrid (VB10) turret is standard on all Y-axis lathes. 

When the Finishing Sub-Spindle option is ordered, the Included Tool Kit is replaced by a new one ,as described below. The Tool Kit is compatible with the Inch or Metric Hybrid Turret.

Inch version of the Bolt-On Tool Kit contains the following:

  • 1 each 0.75" Face Groove Holder
  • 1 each 1.0" ID Holder
  • 1 each 1.25" ID Holder
  • 1 each 3/4" Extended Parting Holder
  • 1 each 3/4" OD Extended Twin Holder
  • 1 each 3/4" ID Extended Twin Holder
  • 1 each 3/4" ID Extended Twin Reversed Holder
  • 4 each coolant blocks, 4 each wedge/clamps and assorted coolant fittings

Metric version of the Bolt-On Tool Kit contains the following:

  • 1 each 20 mm Face Groove Holder
  • 2 each 32 mm ID Holder

When the Finishing Sub-Spindle option is ordered, the Included Tool Kit is replaced by a new one, as described below. The Tool Kit is compatible with the BMT65 Turret.

Inch version of the BMT65 Tool Kit contains the following:

  • 3 each BMT65 1" Twin OD Toolholders
  • 2 each BMT65 1.25" Twin ID Boring Holders
  • 1 each BMT65 1.5" ID  Split Boring Bar Holder

Metric version of the BMT65 Tool Kit contains the following:

  • 3 each BMT65 25 mm Twin OD Toolholders
  • 2 each BMT65 32 mm Twin ID Boring Holders
  • 1 each BMT65 40 mm ID  Split Boring Bar Holder

Sub-Spindle Included Parts Ejector

A very high-volume production setup common with sub-spindle lathes involves a bar feeder and a parts catcher. This trio of options allows for extended periods of unattended parts machining. 

This is why we include a Parts Ejector with every Sub-Spindle Option. The Parts Ejector bolts directly to the chuck, and provides a very simple way to eject a finished part into the parts catcher chute, for continual machine operation without opening the door.
